1. Introduction

Welcome to One Island.

One Island is a digital platform designed to make everyday life on the Isle of Man easier by bringing together trusted local information, services and experiences in one place. Depending on how you use the platform, One Island may provide access to local news, events, public notices, transport information, business listings, taxi services, community features and other digital services.

Your privacy is important to us.

This Privacy Policy explains how One Island collects, uses, stores, protects and shares your personal information when you use our website, mobile applications and related services (collectively referred to as the "Services").

This Privacy Policy explains:

  • what information we collect;
  • why we collect it;
  • how we use it;
  • when we may share it with trusted third parties;
  • how we protect your information;
  • how long we keep it; and
  • the rights you have over your personal information.

Some features of One Island may be provided by carefully selected third-party providers, such as mapping services, payment providers, transport operators or taxi partners. Where those organisations process your personal information for their own purposes, their own privacy policies may also apply.

By using One Island, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy. Where we rely on your consent to process certain types of information, we will always ask for that consent where required by law, and you remain free to withdraw it at any time.

We encourage you to read this Privacy Policy alongside our Terms of Use and Cookie & Similar Technologies Policy, which explain how the One Island platform operates and how cookies and similar technologies are used.

8. Location Services

Some One Island Services use your device's location to provide relevant information and functionality based on where you are. Location Services are entirely optional. You choose whether to allow One Island to access your location, and you can change this permission at any time through your device settings.

8.1 How We Use Location Information

With your permission, we may use your device's approximate or precise location to:

  • display nearby businesses and services;
  • provide local news, events and public notices relevant to your area;
  • help plan journeys using public transport;
  • identify nearby bus stops and transport options;
  • assist with taxi bookings;
  • provide local weather and travel information;
  • improve search results and recommendations; and

The information used will depend on the Service you choose to use.

8.2 When We Access Your Location

One Island only accesses your location when it is needed to provide a Service you have requested or where you have given permission. For example, location information may be used when you:

  • search for nearby businesses;
  • request public transport directions;
  • book a taxi;
  • search for nearby events;
  • request local travel information; or
  • use another location-enabled Service.

Some features may continue to work without location access, although functionality may be limited.

8.3 Continuous Location Tracking

One Island does not continuously monitor or track your location in the background for advertising or profiling purposes. We do not build a history of your movements or track where you go throughout the day simply because the app is installed on your device. If a future Service requires temporary background location access—for example, to improve the accuracy of an active taxi journey or another real-time transport feature —we will clearly explain why the permission is required and request your consent where necessary.

8.4 Sharing Location Information

Where necessary to provide a Service you have requested, limited location information may be shared with trusted service providers or partners. For example:

  • mapping and navigation providers;
  • taxi operators or drivers;
  • transport service providers; or
  • other technology providers supporting the relevant Service.

We only share the minimum information necessary to deliver the Service and require our service providers to protect your information in accordance with applicable data protection laws.

8.5 Your Choices

You remain in control of your location information.

You can:

  • allow or deny location access when prompted;
  • change your location permissions through your device settings;
  • disable location services at any time; and
  • continue using many One Island Services without enabling location access, although some features may not operate as intended.

10.5 Payments

Where payment functionality is available, payments will be processed through secure third-party payment providers. One Island does not store full payment card numbers or card security codes on its own systems. Payment providers may process information necessary to authorise, complete, refund or investigate transactions in accordance with their own privacy policies.

17. Third-Party Providers

One Island works with carefully selected third-party providers who help us operate, maintain and improve our Services. We only share personal information where it is necessary to provide the Services, meet our legal obligations or protect the security and integrity of the platform. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

17.1 Service Providers

We may share personal information with trusted providers that support the operation of One Island, including organisations that provide:

  • cloud hosting and infrastructure;
  • data storage and backup services;
  • authentication and identity services;
  • mapping and geolocation services;
  • analytics and performance monitoring;
  • customer support systems;
  • email, SMS and push notification services;
  • payment processing (where applicable);
  • fraud prevention and security services; and
  • other technology services necessary to operate the platform.

These providers are only permitted to process personal information on our behalf and in accordance with our instructions.

17.2 Service Partners

Where you choose to use specific One Island Services, we may share limited personal information with relevant service partners to enable those Services. Depending on the Service you use, this may include:

  • transport operators;
  • taxi operators and licensed drivers;
  • event organisers;
  • businesses you choose to contact or interact with; and
  • other organisations involved in delivering the Service you have requested.

We only share the personal information that is reasonably necessary for those organisations to provide the relevant Service.

Depending on the nature of the Service, these organisations may process your personal information either:

  • as a data processor, acting on our behalf and under our instructions; or
  • as an independent data controller, where they determine how and why your personal information is processed in order to provide their own services or comply with their own legal obligations.

For example, where you book a taxi through One Island, we share the information necessary to facilitate your booking with the relevant taxi operator or licensed driver. Once the booking has been accepted, the taxi operator or driver may act as an independent data controller in relation to the transportation service they provide and any legal or regulatory obligations that apply to them.

Where another organisation acts as an independent data controller, their processing of your personal information will be governed by their own privacy information and legal obligations.

17.3 Professional Advisers

We may share personal information where necessary with professional advisers acting on our behalf, including:

  • legal advisers;
  • accountants;
  • auditors;
  • insurers; and
  • other professional service providers.

Such organisations are required to protect personal information and only use it for the purposes for which it has been shared.

17.4 Legal and Regulatory Requirements

We may disclose personal information where we believe it is necessary to:

  • comply with applicable laws or regulations;
  • respond to lawful requests from courts, regulators or law enforcement agencies;
  • protect the rights, property or safety of One Island, our users or others;
  • investigate suspected fraud or criminal activity; or
  • establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

We will only disclose information where we are legally permitted or required to do so.

17.5 Business Changes

If One Island undergoes a merger, acquisition, investment, restructuring or sale of all or part of its business, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. If this happens, we will take reasonable steps to ensure your personal information remains protected and will notify users where required by applicable law.

17.6 International Service Providers

Some of our trusted providers may process personal information outside the Isle of Man, the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area. Where this happens, we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your personal information, including contractual safeguards or other recognised mechanisms required under applicable data protection legislation. Further information about international transfers is provided in Section 18 of this Privacy Policy.

For example, personal information may be processed by providers offering cloud hosting, data storage, analytics, customer support, payment processing, mapping services or other technology infrastructure.

Whenever personal information is transferred outside the Isle of Man, the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area (EEA), we take appropriate steps to ensure it continues to receive an adequate level of protection. These safeguards may include:

  • transferring personal information to countries recognised as providing an adequate level of data protection;
  • entering into approved contractual safeguards with our service providers, such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA), where applicable;
  • carrying out appropriate assessments of international data transfers; and
  • implementing additional technical and organisational security measures where necessary.

We carefully select our service providers and require them to protect personal information in accordance with applicable data protection legislation. If you would like more information about the safeguards we apply when transferring personal information internationally, please contact us using the details provided in this Privacy Policy.

Certain features of the One Island Services may have minimum age requirements or require the involvement or consent of a parent or legal guardian before they can be accessed or used.
